Prevent Mold while Storing your Cannabis

It’s important to consider how you will be storing your marijuana. Using a Ziploc is not the most efficient method of storage.  When looking to get the most out of your supply, you will want to know how to properly store your cannabis. Keeping the freshness is an important part of storing marijuana. Without proper storage mold can develop on nugs. Mold is not only unhealthy but it causes degrading of the product which results in poor quality.

When curing marijuana after harvesting; you will want to use a proper curing room that allows for proper airflow. If you don’t cure it right you can get bud rot. If the marijuana was cured right then it’s crucial to store the product in the necessary steps to prevent mold. Containers are used to store the cannabis. It’s important to store the product in a low humidity level. Exposure to humidity will continue when you open and close the container. The two types of mold that are of concern in regards to consumer health are Aspergillus and Botrytis cinerea. The risks associated with Botrytis cinerea are less serious than those with Aspergillus.

Botrytis cinerea is known as bud rot. This is best known for growing on cannabis plants. It destroys the plant starting with the stem and works outward. It is a grayish-white color that works at killing the flower and turning into a moist plant matter. It can be found on the plant and flower itself. It generally is caused by a lack of airflow which causes the plant to retain moisture. It can also be found on cured cannabis.

Aspergillus is a common mold that can be found on the plant as well in the air. It can cause health effects when spores are exposed damaging lungs and weakening immune systems. Aspergillus is found in soil and in places with high moisture such as the buds of a cannabis plant. This mold can cause a lot of problems when it comes to storing your cannabis. Once the cannabis gets mold on it, it’s no longer useable. If you were to smoker, there is a chance that it could make you sick. . Symptoms associated with Aspergillus can cause infections, cough, severe fatigue, invasive pulmonary aspergillosis, hemoptysis, and death

In order to prevent your bud from rotting and yourself from getting sick it’s important to be vigilant of the storage containers. The best thing to do when you come across either one of these molds is to through the product away. Edibles can also cause serious health effects when not properly stored. Always be sure to refrigerate your product if need be. The best way to prevent mold while storing your marijuana flower is in a constant dry environment. Many containers offer air-tight jars which are a valuable option.  Humidity packs offer a surer guarantee of regulating humidity in jars. There are different relative humidity such as 62% and 55%. You can select a packet based off personal preference when it comes to how dry you want your product. Preventing mold from growing on your cannabis is a very important step that every grower and consumer should take.
