How to choose the right cannabis strains from medical marijuana dispensaries

Why do people consume marijuana?

There are a number why people consume marijuana. There are three categories of why people choose the strains they consume or grow. The first reason is people want to choose the best cannabis strain that is really dank will get them super stony. The second reason is a person is using cannabis medicinally and there are a number of ways that marijuana can help a patient with their medical conditions. The third reason is more related to hemp cultivation and people usually choose hemp (cannabis ruderalis) strains that are going to yield the farmer the most hemp product. Hemp is usually grown for the later CBD extraction, the stalks for fibers, and/or the GLA which is a beneficial vegetable oil form hemp seeds.

The cannabis plant also has other nutritional uses because hemp seed oil contains: phytosterols, chlorophyll, carotenes, lecithin. These four things are all great for your health. There are other compounds found in cannabis, such as cannabinoids, that will determine what kind of effect the cannabis will have someone medicinally or otherwise.

The most famous cannabinoid is THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) as this compound is responsible for getting stoners high. THC also works in conjunction with other compounds so the mixture of cannabinoids will dictate the effects of the marijuana being consumed. CBD is another cannabinoid found in marijuana and works great for pain relief or anti-anxiety.

Recreational cannabis users want to experience a high or euphoric feeling. High THC and high yielding marijuana plants are sought after by cannabis cultivators for the recreational marijuana market. Cannabis strains that are high in THC and CBD content are going to make someone feel pretty damn good.

What is the difference between cannabis sativa, cannabis indica, and hemp?

There are three major categories of cannabis species: cannabis sativa, cannabis indica, and cannabis ruderalis (hemp). Many people that are looking for a head high are more likely to choose sativa-dominant cannabis strains. Sativa-dominant cannabis strains are known to give the marijuana consumer an up-lighting and energetic feeling. If someone is looking to do some creative thinking, they may consider sativa-dominant strains.People who are looking for the body high and have that sedated feeling are going to go with indica-dominant. Hemp will have virtually have THC and anyone smoking hemp will not get high but hemp does contain CBD which is acts as a pain reliever and reduces anxiety.

When was marijuana first used medicinally?

People have been using marijuana medicinally for centuries. People were using hemp before anyone realized that cannabis can be effective in a medicinal capacity. The first recorded use of cannabis being used for medical purposes was Chinese Surgeon Hua Tuo (c. 140-208) as he used ground marijuana as an anesthetic.

What marijuana strains are right for your condition?

The next section covers how marijuana is used medicinally and how to choose cannabis strains depending on what you want the marijuana to impact you. If you are having trouble falling asleep, you may want to find marijuana strains that are high in a cannabinoid, cannabinol (CBN) as this compound promotes sleep. THC will eventually convert into CBN as marijuana with the application of heat. CBN can also be converted from THC as the marijuana becomes stale. Indica-dominant strains are known to make the marijuana consumer sedated and sleepy.

If a medical marijuana patient is looking to reduce pain in their body, it has been studied that small amounts of THC will bind to pain receptors in the body and reduce pain. CBD is also a cannabinoid that is responsible for pain relief. CBD will work by itself but it is important to know that THC and CBD work in conjunction with each other to beneficially impact the medical marijuana patient.

Small doses of THC have been shown to reduce anxiety by binding to CB1 receptors in the parts in the brain which are responsible for stress and anxiety. However, for anyone who has been super stoned can say that too much THC can actually have the opposite effect and anxiety levels rise. With that being said, a medical marijuana patient looking to reduce anxiety should look for marijuana strains that are mid to low THC and very high CBD signature.

How are cannabis strains named?

Aside from the medicinal effects that marijuana can have, a cannabis consumer might now be looking to try different flavors and aromas from the spectrum of marijuana strains that are constantly evolving. Each marijuana strain will have its own signature of flavonoids and terpenoids which will dictate the flavor and aroma. Sometimes these marijuana strains are named after their flavor and aroma.
