The American Society of Addiction Medicine views marijuana as non-medicinal

“Cannabis Should Be Subjected to the Standards of Federal Regulators rather than to Voters’ Whims at the Ballot Box ” – Society of Addiction Medicine

Who is the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) and why are they significant?

The American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) is “considered the nation’s leading professional society of physicians involved in addiction prevention, treatment, research, education, and public policy”  by their own website. If they are a significant voice for public policy, then any medical marijuana patient in the United States should be concerned. They are not peanuts as they represent over 3,700 physicians.

An article from the American Society of Addiction Medicine from March, 2011 outlines the dangers of marijuana although the ultimate conclusion could leave some people puzzled. They state that because marijuana lacks the “clinical research on a controlled substance with a high potential for abuse”, it’s use as a medical application should cease immediately. This was from a white paper published March 23, 2011 by the American Society of Addiction Medicine.

No FDA trials….No Love

Their refusal to recognize marijuana as a medicine is due to the fact that cannabis has not gone FDA trials. The American Society of Addiction Medicine recommends for marijuana to be recognized as no medicinal use to anyone because of the lack of FDA trials on humans even though cannabis has been around for centuries. This anti-states’ rights organization also “supports the need for federal regulatory standards for drug approval and distribution, and discourages state in the federal medication-approval process.” They guys have no love for states’ rights when it comes allowing access to medical marijuana.

Should Medical Marijuana Doctors have their licenses revoked according to the ASAM?

There is more to this story that this organization calls for in their white paper. They believe that medical marijuana doctors are “forsaking the Hippocratic Oath” by recommending cannabis for medicinal use and that they should ” possibly have their license revoked.”
